EXHIBITION at the BANKHEAD THEATER GALLERY

July 20, 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo landing on the moon. The Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center will be mounting an exhibition of the moon landing that will have large and impactful visual images. The goal of the exhibit is to teach youth and adults about the historical significance of the Apollo Moon Landing, and the science and technology required for space travel. Through art, the large format historical photos from NASA and the interactive family-friendly activities will powerfully convey the first manned mission to land on the moon and return safely to Earth.

The Man on the Moon exhibit will be on display in the Bankhead Theater Gallery July 9 - Aug 25. The exhibit is free and open to the public and will offer interactive activities that teach youth and adults about scientific discovery and technological advancement. The exhibit is a part of Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center’s arts education outreach program and aligns with our mission to offer a broad range of arts opportunities and experiences to engage our diverse community.

The first event of the exhibition will feature the Tri-Valley Stargazers Astronomy Club. The Stargazers will be outside of the Bankhead Theater Gallery on July 9 and Aug 6 from 7-9 pm. for special “moon gazing” events in conjunction with the Moon Landing exhibit. The event is free, open to the public and is family–friendly. The Tri-valley Stargazers will have three or four telescopes set up starting at 7pm and the view of the moon (weather permitting!) will be stronger and stronger as the sky gets darker. The gallery will be open to the public from 7-9 during the moon viewing events.

The Commemoration Reception for this exhibit is on July 20 from 1-4 pm. It is free and open to the public. It is free and open to the public. Special events at the Opening include an Apollo 11 scale model of the Apollo flight through LED animation. Also at the Opening will be a flight simulation of the Landing Module. Try your hand at piloting the Lunar module to a safe resting spot. Light refreshments for the Reception will have fun moon themed snacks.

The Gallery is open to the public Mondays through Wednesdays from 12-4 pm and for ticketed patrons during performances.

The “Man on the Moon” exhibit is the result of the inspiration, research, and exhibit planning of Livermore resident, photographer and illustrator, Ken Ball, in collaboration with curator Anne Giancola of the Bankhead Theater.
